a. I have never been expected, but I have been in situation when I attended Lee High that I was not forced into speaking/learning Spanish but it definitely helped. I have many friends who speak Spanish, French, African, at home and come to school being expected to know and speak English fluently.
b. You could say that speaking one language at home and one at school but depending on where your job is you may need to speak another language. Not necessarily English or Spanish, but many other options as well.
c. I believe "belonging" will be important in my career choice because I am going into management and there I will meet many people. I feel I wont be belonging to one language but many different ones. Like owning a house but having many to stay in for periods of time.
2)
a. Families are constantly changing through life. Not just due to age or family issues but due to life. Nothing can be obtained in life without some kind of sacrifice.
b. Yes, it is possible. You could go to an primarily English speaking college and also enter a primarily speaking English work force afterwards. Same applies for other languages as well.
c. I dont think that he thinks it is worth it. Family always comes first no matter what the situation is and once you've lost your family you've lost everything.
