A response to "A homemade education" By Malcom X

1) Some of the values implied when the word homemade is brought up is old fashioned, or I see it as a way of saying "The way I like it done". Somethings you get from the store can indeed be better than homemade things because people do it for their profession and sell it to consumers, but if your grandma makes a homemade pie or cake or any other delicate that you have grown up liking then it will be hard if not impossible for anyone to ever be able to recreate that. Then again some homemade things may not be as good as a store bought thing, for instance, a refrigerator, given the right pieces and parts you could potentially create your own refrigerator, but will it be as good as that pre-made one that you can buy at lowes? The one that is metallic, with the built in ice maker/dispenser. Somethings are just better left to the professionals to provide for you rather than you take the leap and try to make your own homemade version. My mom works for "Prison enterprises" so she and I have encounters with inmates from prisons all across Louisiana pretty frequently and there are many, many, many inmates, anywhere from hunt, to kent, to angola, that have educated themselves after earning the trustee rank and being granted access to the prisons facilities.

2) In the bell hooks quote Malcom X relates freedom to education by expressing his views that with freedom and no education you cant do too much, but with education, you can always be free. He says that every student in his classroom should actively participate and use the time and opportunity provided for everything that its worth instead of just sitting there and doing just enough to get by and finding better things to do to help pass the time.

3) If I were ever locked in a cell for a certain amount of time I would probably choose math as my subject to pursue. After being released from prison my main goal would probably be trying to find some way to connect math/learning with a form of education for younger people in an attempt to help sway their ideas and actions. Maybe coming from a former inmate, that has gone through everything it would help influence their lives in a better direction. In order to reach these goals I would have to achieve some form of visual literacy so I could show and explain how the concept would work in the eyes of the students and make it easy for them to understand.

  1. Good post. You hit all of the points well and answered the questions very well. Your right about the grandma cooking idea. Homemade food is always the best. I also agree with how education gives you freedom. I loved the point where malcom said how there was no other place he'd rather be then reading the books he read. Good point about the profession question. I think if students would hear more realistic stories like this. It would motivate them to stay in school and do well.

  2. I liked that you explained your reasoning for your first question very well, you did bring to mind some things I haven't thought of.
